There’s no shortage of heating, cooling, and ventilation professionals in the Dayton area, but not all offer the same level of expertise and customer service. If you’re planning to hire an HVAC technician, whether for your home or your contracting company, pay attention to qualities beyond basic certification.
Technical skills
While any technician you hire should be licensed and insured, advanced optional certifications, such as NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification shows the technician is serious about their career.
In addition to training, make sure they’re comfortable working with mechanical components and systems. Not everyone who makes it through training is. Does the technician seem at ease with all aspects of disassembling, repairing, and installing heating and cooling equipment? Are they confident in their troubleshooting skills? In addition to technical skills, knowledge of safety standards is also a must.
Job Management Skills
An HVAC technician must often deal with multiple jobs on a daily basis, so good organizational skills are critical. Note if the technician keeps complete and accurate records of each job and can access any part of those records quickly. Because it’s not always easy to predict how long any given job will take, technicians also need good time management skills to ensure they arrive at each job site on time and prepared.
People Skills
Any HVAC technician who deals directly with customers must have the patience, empathy, and simple good manners needed to work with people who may be frustrated and irritated.
They also need the ability to communicate with non-experts. Before the job starts, this means collecting information on the problems the customer is facing and understanding what they want from their heating and cooling system. During the job, it means explaining possible solutions and the pros and cons of each in a non-technical way any homeowner can understand.
A certain amount of persuasiveness and negotiation skills are also valuable for helping customers find the solutions that will bring the results they want even when they don’t fully understand the technical aspects.
