Whether you need installation, maintenance, or repair, a successful HVAC project requires a combination of quality equipment, professional experience and expert-level technical knowledge. A strong indicator of professionalism and dedication to high standards is the contractor’s involvement in professional industry organizations. One of the most notable is North American Technician Excellence, or NATE. NATE-certified technicians are thoroughly trained and rigorously tested experts in HVAC installation, service and repair.
NATE is a major nonprofit education and certification organization for technicians in the HVAC industry. Founded in 1997, it has certified more than 26,000 technicians in several different HVAC specialties. NATE certification is recognized by various business groups and unions and throughout the HVAC industry. It is considered a reliable indicator of technician proficiency and knowledge. NATE partners include some of the industry’s leading professional organizations, including the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
To become a NATE-certified technician, individuals must prove they possess in-depth subject knowledge, technical expertise and practical skills. Technicians must pass a test of general HVAC knowledge and at least one specialized subject exam in installation or service. NATE-certified technicians commonly specialize in areas such as:
- Air conditioning
- Gas heating
- Oil heating
- Air distribution
- Commercial refrigeration
- Air-to-air heat pumps
- Ground-source heat pumps
- HVAC efficiency
You can rely on a NATE-certified technician to possess high levels of training and technical knowledge, as well as dedication to the professional standards and quality initiatives of the entire HVAC industry.
NATE-certified technicians are called back to revise projects at a rate almost 13 percent lower than non-NATE techs. Almost a quarter of surveyed customers reported being extremely satisfied with the performance of their NATE-certified technician when compared to a non-NATE technician. Nearly a third of survey respondents indicate high levels of satisfaction with systems installed by NATE-certified professionals.
