With the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s approval of R410A, a new refrigerant that has proved less harmful to the environment in terms of ozone depletion, Dayton area residents may be wondering what’s next in terms of their older, R22 operated air conditioners. While the intention is to eventually phase out the R22 systems, for now, homeowners can continue operation and service with R22 refrigerant.
While retrofits to convert R22 air conditioners to the new R410A format are allowed and certainly encouraged, the EPA is not currently requiring this process. However, it is important to note that R22 refrigerant will likely rise in cost as EPA limitations reduce the amount of R22 refrigerant and equipment in production. For those homeowners considering a R410A retrofit for their R22 air conditioner, there are certain considerations that must be kept in mind:
- R410A and R22 refrigerants are not compatible.
- Retrofitted air conditioners must be cleaned thoroughly before charging with new R410A refrigerant to prevent unintentional mixture with R22 refrigerant.
- Remember to properly match indoor and outdoor coils for optimal system operation and efficiency.
To ensure a retrofit is done properly, consult with a qualified contractor. After all, the R410A refrigerant transition has led to system changes for many heat pumps and air conditioners, including new compressors and system-specific component designs. Thus, special care must be taken to ensure that retrofitting is possible, cost-effective and properly executed.
