A programmable thermostat can provide your home with significant energy and cost savings. However, if you don’t use it properly, you will not get the maximum amount of benefit from your investment. Follow these simple operating tips for programmable thermostats for the maximum energy savings and cost savings possible in your Southwest Ohio home:
- Use one programmable thermostat per heating or cooling unit in your home. If you have more than one heating or cooling unit, then you will need multiple programmable thermostats.
- Replace the batteries in your programmable thermostat once a year. This will enable the unit to accurately program the temperature year-round, without any problems.
- In the winter, set the night temperature to 8 to 10 degrees colder than the normal temperature setting in your house.
- Set the away temperature to 8 to 10 degrees colder than your normal temperature in the winter, and 8 to 10 degrees higher in the summer.
- Allow the lowered temperature settings to run for 8 to 10 hours at a time, if possible. This will maximize energy savings and lower energy bills.
- Set the normal temperature to come on just before you wake up. Set the lower temperature to start right after you leave the house for the day. Set the normal temperature to come back on right before you arrive home for the day.
- If you have a varied schedule, you will benefit from a programmable thermostat with several programming options. Some units come with weekday programs, weekend programs, and vacation programs.
- While you’re away on vacation, set the temperature to 10 degrees above or below the normal temperature, depending on the season. Program the unit to return to the normal temperature one or two hours before you plan to arrive home so that the house is warm or cool when you get there.
